Statement of Intent
After seventy years, The Coventry Evening Telegraph offices and print works have closed and are to be demolished. Almost all machinery has been removed, offices have been emptied of furniture and silent corridors now lead to deserted rooms.
During several visits to the building, I was inspired greatly by the shadowy, empty areas and passageways that were lit only by hastily rigged safety lighting or by the daylight that filtered through broken blinds. It seemed to me that the building was like an abandoned subterranean city.

My vision for this monochrome project was to show the caverns, chambers and dark passageways of this city and to portray the atmosphere, mystery and sometimes even beauty that I saw there. My panel is a journey from the once furnished, private apartments of the paper’s owners down through deteriorating offices to stark, gloomy basement areas.
